Recently, NCMS sixth graders read and analyzed a poem by Maya Angelou entitled “Life Doesn’t Frighten Me.”  They were then challenged to write their own poem about a fear – either real or imagined.  The poem was to include a rhyme of some sort, a refrain (a repeated line), and it was to be at least 12 lines.

Please enjoy what some of our talented young writers have submitted.

The Scariest Dream of them All

Peeking around the door,

Noises on the floor.

Shadows in my closet,

Drip drop from the faucet.

Spiders crawling on the wall,

My biggest fear of them all.

Creepy clowns laughter

Makes me think everything is a disaster.

My body is shaking

And my heart is racing.

But then I wake up and realize

This is just a dream.

The scariest, creepiest dream that I have ever seen.

The scariest, creepiest dream that I have ever seen.

The Fear of the Dark

The night, the night

Find me in the dark.

I hide away under

My shadow going

Too much to take the

Night the night

Taking me away

Me in too much

Despair to

Take no one

To talk to

No one to

Listen to

The night, the night.

Fears of Mine

These are fears of mine

Falling off a high place

That’s the case

Being flattened on the ground

These are fears of mine.

Being eaten alive

Chewed and swallowed

Crushed and smashed

Never to revive

These are fears of mine.

Bitten by a venomous creature

With toxins flowing through my veins

Makes me unable to move

The pain is the ultimate feature

These are fears of mine.

I Hate Bugs

I hate bugs

They creep me out

Some crawl on the floor

Others fly about.

I hate bugs.

Bugs are gross

They get into your food

They fly in your face

They ruin your mood.

I hate bugs.

Some bugs sting

Other may bite

Better hit the switch

Bugs are attracted to light!

I hate bugs.

Creeps Me Out

The thing I most fear

Are the big slithery snakes

In the grass I hear.

The thing I most fear

Are big hairy spiders

Especially when they are near.

The thing I most fear

Are the sneaky creepy clowns

That come up behind me and appear.

The thing I most fear

Are the destructive tornados

That come every year.

Those are my fears.

I hope they don’t appear.
