Guiding students to make connections between subject areas, topics, and interests can sometimes present challenges.  However, the Nebraska City Middle School Sixth Grade is doing just that!  

Sixth Grade Math classes are learning about whole numbers, integers, and rational numbers.  With those skills come the relationship between decimals and fractions, wholes versus parts, and how those parts work together. 

In English Language Arts, students are being introduced to a variety of prefixes and suffixes this week.  They are using daily lessons, online Quizlet practice, and examples of prefixes and suffixes in words they use every day. 

Science class is where the world of measurements is being introduced.  Students are realizing measuring is part of their every day life, regardless of interests, career prospects, and hobbies!  With measurement, students are learning how to convert numbers between decimals and fractions, the difference between standard and metric measurements, and the prefixes of many words associated with both science measurement and numbers!  

In Social Studies students have been learning about the Paleolithic and Neolithic Ages.  When creating comic book pages to illustrate differences between these two ages, they are applying writing skills, and understanding for dates and timelines, and development of our understanding of science and the world around us throughout centuries of time.  

When information is taken from one class, and that knowledge is then used in other classes students attend, this contributes to deepening their knowledge and understanding in all areas of learning. This can motivate and further engage students who may otherwise feel each class is an isolated subject with no real connections in the overall learning experience.
